AS THEY PULLED into the Skye Racing parking lot, Bridget noted two cars that hadn’t been there the last time. A black Ford pickup sat in front of Gearloose’s travel trailer, and a sleek, silver sports car sat in front of Sarah’s single-wide.
“Looks like the widow has company,” Bridget said.
Lew pulled over and parked in front of the shop. “I won’t bother her for more than the key.” His eyes danced. “That is, unless you want to pay her a social visit?”
“No, thanks, much as I hate to decline. Let’s get on with the job at hand.”
“Roger that.” Lew got out and strode to the trailer house.
Bridget watched as he rang the bell. No answer. He knocked on the door, folding his arms and tapping his foot as he waited on the porch. He knocked again. At last the door opened.
Lew spoke to the person inside. He gestured toward the shop and then stood leaning against the porch rail, waiting again.
He straightened up as Sarah stepped out on the porch, pulling the door shut behind her. She wore a blue satin dressing gown, and Bridget automatically checked her watch. It was one in the afternoon. She noted that Sarah’s hair looked a lot better than the last two times she had seen her.
Sarah handed something to Lew then stepped back into her house. He descended the porch stairs, and Bridget got out of the pickup and met him at the shop.
Lew opened the door, and they entered a clean and orderly workplace. Bridget looked around. Banks of hooks on a pegboard wall held hand tools and small electric tools, their cords wrapped and neatly tied. Another wall was floor-to-ceiling shelves, and a third had large machines lined up against the tall pressure tank of a compressor.
Lew took the chain from around his neck and let the golden metal circle dangle from his fingers. “Where would Ben hide a safe that could only be opened by this washer?”
“In the wall behind something moveable or beneath the surface of a desk.” She pointed to the workbench on the wall underneath the pegboard. “Or there.”
Lew put his hands on his hips, and his eyes raked the area. “You take the wall. I’ll take the flat surfaces.”
Bridget climbed up and proceeded to work along the pegboard, pushing hanging tools and implements aside, looking for some sort of safe hidden behind. She was halfway along the area above the workbench when the door burst open and a very tall, angular man rocketed into the room.
Bridget noticed brown eyes, magnified by the glasses he wore, and an Adam’s apple protruding from a long, thin neck. He stopped in the middle of the floor and impaled Bridget with a glare as she was standing on the workbench with a saw blade in her hands.
“You there!” He pointed a long, thin finger at her. “What do you think you’re doing?”
Bridget opened her mouth but couldn’t think of anything to say. She was saved by Lew.
“Hello, Gearloose,” he said, approaching the cranelike figure and holding out his hand.
